Built by Anthony Murphy, the railroad foreman who helped chase down The General in the Great Locomotive Chase, this is one of the oldest buildings still standing in Atlanta. Previous tenants have included wagon dealerships, farming equipment suppliers, a blacksmith, a saloon, grocers, a soda fountain, a German-language newspaper, lawyers, and doctors.
Peyton Allen, one of Atlanta’s first black lawyers, had his office here in the early 1900s. Rather than riding at the back of Atlanta’s segregated streetcars, he rode a bicycle.
